Why the government is building more prisons in Nigeria – Dambazau
Minister of Interior, Abdulrahman Dambazau explains why the Federal Government is constructing more Prisons across Nigeria
Speaking at the commissioning of some projects and newly bought vehicles at the Nigeria Prison Service (NPS).
Dambazau stated that, some of the Prisons were old and over a century so it needed to be replaced.
In his words “We are building Prisons but not increasing the number of Prisons”.
“Most likely, we are reducing it, some of our Prisons are most likely century old. What we are doing is to build new ones that meet the global standard”.
Dambazau said that they are focusing more on criminals and not the crime they committed.
In his words “We are shifting focus from the crime to the criminals, we are not seeking vengeance for the fact that the offender is a human and can change”.
He therefore advised the NPS to take good care of the vehicles and other projects the government executed.
He further stated that there would be more improvement in the service when the Nigeria Prisons and correctional service bill is accented by the President, President Muhammadu Buhari.
